National Anthem and it’s effects!
I was treated to lunch today by a co-worker to Mission Barbecue. Was told that it was good but I had to miss out since I’m just on poultry and beyond now. Anyway at 12 noon there was an announcement for everybody to rise and participate in the National Anthem. We were the only people of color in the place and continued to eat our food while everybody and I mean everybody had their hands over their hearts and were singing their asses off.
What was noteworthy was that there were very young Yurugu kids there and they looked at us very confused while we sat and ate. Actually the look was more like disappointment.
Obviously they were not aware of the nuances and failings of the National Anthem, it’s graphic history and what the song was originally written for.
Somehow I see there was a teachable moment for the young ones. I hope they understand that it was not protest but critical knowledge on display there today.
If only some of our Afrikan youth were there as well. The dynamic would have been quite the opposite.
Htp!
